The small backland site contained an old, two bedroom post-war school master’s bungalow. It shares boundaries with 7 neighbours and is overlooked by many more. With the height of the proposed building limited to the highest point of the existing bungalow, TDO’s design went downwards to create a three storey house with two levels completely below ground.
Constrained by the shared boundaries, the proposed house has just one elevation. The design is therefore an exercise in top light, volume and shared views. By creating a large central courtyard, external garden space sheltered from neighbouring eyes is introduced two levels down. This also brings light into the depth of the building with the living spaces encircling it. Light is focused in other key areas with carefully located lightwells, rooflights and voids.
